Celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week: May 5–9

As summer approaches and the school year winds down, it's time to recognize the hard work and dedication of educators during National Teacher Appreciation Week, running Monday, May 5 through Friday, May 9. The week includes National Teachers Day on Tuesday, May 6.

Why Teacher Appreciation Matters

According to a 2023 Gallup poll, 73% of parents with K-12 students rate their children’s teachers as “excellent” or “good” — up from 71% in 2018. Despite this support, many teachers report high stress: 77% say their work is frequently stressful, and 68% describe it as overwhelming, per a 2024 Pew survey.

A separate survey by Horace Mann Educators Corporation found that over 30% of teachers feel underappreciated, yet most remain deeply committed to their students. To help, Horace Mann is extending Teacher Appreciation Week into a month-long virtual celebration, including weekly giveaways and two grand prizes: a $2,500 Liberty Travel gift card.

A Brief History

Teacher Appreciation Week began in 1984, thanks to the National PTA, while National Teachers Day was championed as far back as 1953 by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who advocated for honoring educators' vital role in shaping future generations.
